The latest addition to the 05 Botanical gardens of Sri Lanka would be the Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens. With a large area of 79 hectares, this Botanical garden was opened to the public in 2014.
where is this?
Avissawella. In fact, if you check for the route from Colombo to Leisure World, a turn to the Kaluaggala – Labugama road would do the trick. It’s a short drive from Colombo and easily arrived within 1 1/2 hours of an easy drive on good condition roads.
what’s to see?
From a family picnic to a walk with the beloved, this cool climate – green environment would be a nice Day out from Colombo or close by areas. With an entry ticket of LKR 50 per local and LKR 1500 per foreign passport holder, you can spend almost a day at this beautiful location.
To add further, many Wedding photo shoots and music video production teams can be seen daily exploring and capturing beautiful locations and moments all around the park.
what’s special here?
The main reason behind the garden being opened to the public is to offer a new experience for local as well as foreign visitors. This botanical garden will also serve the purpose of conserving endemic and threatened plants that are found in the Ratnapura – Sinharaja region.
The garden also serves as a conservation ground for wet lowland plants while promoting bamboo cultivation. Training programs for individuals who are involved in horticulture and facilitating research opportunities for researches and undergraduate students are also carried out here.
The park is very educational as well. All trees and plants are Named with a board next to it or hanging on the tree-body itself. If you are expecting the Peradeniya or Hakgala Botanical garden experience, to be frank, the Seethawaka Botanic Garden is quite different. This acts more towards conserving the threatened plans and fauna for the future generations.
a little extra…
The whole park area is with brick-layered pavements for the visitors. Please refrain from walking on the grass even when the pavement is available. We were able to take a full round around this beautiful garden in 2 1/2 hours. With many locations for cool photographs and portraits, The Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens is surely a pleasant and fun visit.
There are several houses converted to restaurants around the road. Some lunch can be arranged and the meals were tasty and clean. As this park attracts a lot of visitors, many take a dip at the nearby river which gives a glimpse of the cold water flowing in the area.
For anyone trying to find a nice location to visit with friends and family, the Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens is a nice selection. With the short drive from Colombo, it makes this place easy to access too.
